The Harmony Public Library’s Policy on Book Banning and Censorship

Freedom to Read Resolution

Harmony Public Library

The Harmony Public Library Board supports the library’s mission, to “provide access to various types of materials as well as programs as well as programs and services that meet the educational and recreational needs of the community.”  The Board upholds the American Library Association’s “Freedom to Read” statement that “the suppression of ideas is fatal to a democratic society” especially as libraries across the nation are facing a rise in book challenges.

  • Harmony Public Library has books and materials representing different viewpoints, beliefs, backgrounds and experiences; and
  • Harmony Public Library Board members uphold the intellectual freedom of community members; and
  • Removing materials prevents community members from having important access to information; and
  • The freedom to read is essential to our democracy; and
  • Reading is among one of our greatest freedoms; now, therefore, be it RESOVLED,
  • The Harmony Public Library board supports the intellectual freedom for Harmony Public Library patrons; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED,
  • The Board condemns censorship and book banning in all forms.
